Nataliya Byzova and Tetiana Pikush after deliberating "Drugs in Sport" with 6th graders on 27 February 2009
*******************************************************
What the students think (areas of agreement):
*******************************************************
I' d like to present our group's (6-Г grade) areas of agreement:
Drugs can cause problems with health. If sportsmen use drugs during competition, they feel full of energy. But stimulants make them feel washed out after the competitions. Drugs make them aggressive. Taking drugs is the road to a lot of deseases, even cancer and infertility. Sportsmen get used to taking drugs and sportsmen can die. Some beta blockers can influence a nervous system in such a way that sportsmen can become invalids.
Why should sportsmen risk their lives for the sake of a victory?
~Taking part in competitions should be honest, sportsmen should demonstrate their natural srength or results of training.
Ann Alenkova, 6-Г
********************************************************
I am glad to present the areas of agreement of my group(6-Б).
We think that drugs should be banned in sport because they are dangerous for health.
Drugs in big doses and used regularly cause cancer, raise blood pressure, make sportsmen more aggressive then usual, give the feeling of alarm...
Bohdan Hirenko, 6-Б
*********************************************************
I present our group of 6-Б class.
Some sportsmen don't want to work hard and they use drugs. They want to be the winners. Some coaches propose drugs or make them do it. But steroids, for example, cause liver cancer or other serious problems. Beta blockers used in large doses can cause even death. Stimulants make you full of energy, but you will be more aggressive. And after that you feel exhausted and washed out. And you can have different psychical injuries Mostly you will become addicted of drugs. You can die without them. Some sportsmen died in this way. So, if you want to save your life and lives of your "dear and near", don't use drugs.
Ella Yevtushenko, 6-Б

Drugs should not be used in sports. The players are cheating because it gives them an unfair advantadge over the other players. Steriods are especially dangerous because they can cause liver cancer, heart attacks, and strokes. The steriod users, including Barry Bonds, often lie about their use because they know they are not doing their natural best. I believe that A-Rod should never have taken steriods and he should be banned from the Hall of Fame. For those of you who dont know, baseball is a sport where players have to hit a white ball with a wood bat and run around 4 bases that he cannot be tagged on.

I think drugs should be banned in sports. Not only do they cause unfair advantages, but they can do serious bodily harm. Withdrawl from steroids can cause severe depression and a lack of testosterone in men. Steroids can damage the liver and heart, cause acne and hair loss, and do many other bad things to the human body. Sports are supposed to be about who worked the hardest to become the best, not who got their hands on the best drug.

Personally, I believe that steroids and other drugs should be banned from sports. Not only do they give an unfair advantages to thoose athletes who do use, they cause him or him to have uncontralable fits of rage. If the player stops using, they ussually go into a great depression which can easily lead to suiside. While still using, players' bodies experience changes such as loss of hair on the head, facial hair growth, penament liver and muscle damaged, and so on. In my opinion, why even start when you run such a high risk? smile

I believe that performance enhancing drugs should not be used in sports. The only reason I believe this is because they can cause alot of harm to an athelete's body. It can even change the gender of an athelete. If men take these drugs it can cause their bodies to stop producing natural things bvecause they are in the steroids. When the men stop taking the steroids they beggin to get more female characteristics such as a high voice and breast growth. If women takes these drugs they could develope male characteristics such as facial hair, a deep voice, and loss of breasts. The drugs can also cause many other issues such as depression and heart and liver problems. These drugs are not all that bad though. They can often be used as medicine to help people recover from illness.
I believe that although they are harmful to use, drugs do not really affect the performance of an athelete. These drugs may help them get stronger but you still need talent to play a sport and be good at it. In the sprot of baseball you have to hit a ball thrown at you. You can take as many drugs as you want to hit the ball very far, but if you can't hit the ball they have no affect on making you better. Drugs in sports should only be banned becasue of the bad affects they have on your body.
Matthew tongue tongue tongue wacko wacko wacko love

Drugs should definetly be banned in sports. Steriods are illegal in the United States without a prescription. I don't think there should not be an exception in sports. Using drugs causes bones to stop growing, a higher chance for liver disease, a higher chance for a heart attack, and a higher chance for a stroke. When heavy users stop, they can get severe depression. In baseball, some players get mad at a bad call from the umpire. That is when the umpire (he is like the referee of baseball) says someone is out when really they weren't. If they were taking steroids, they would probably get even madder, and become even more violent than they are without the steroids. Drugs should be banned in sports, but steroids are banned and people still use them. I don't know if banning drugs would be effective, but they should still be banned.

Hello,
This is Angie. Right now, in America, there has been some controversy in sports. I don't know if you know what baseball is. If not, it is a game where there are four bases; first, second, third, and home. There is a pitcher too, who throws the ball to the batter. The batter stands at home. When the pitcher throws the ball, the batter hits it with the bat. He runs around the bases until the players in the field get the ball to the base. If the ball gets to the base before the batter does, then the batter is out. There are three outs, once there are three outs they switch, the team in the field goes up to bat- the team batting goes into the field.
There is a player, a very good player. His name is Alex Rodriguez. He has gotten into the hall of fame for playing baseball. The only thing is that he used steriods. In case you don't know what steriods are, i will explain. Steriod are either pills or injections that enhance someone's playing abilities. It sounds good, right? But it comes with a lot of side-effects. They also greatly increase acne, liver abnormalities, tumors, and levels of cholesterol. In addition, they can cause serious permanent heart damage; heart attack; heart rhythm abnormalities; stroke; aggression ("roid rage"); psychiatric disorders, including severe mood swings and depression with suicidal tendencies; stunting of bone growth leading to permanently short stature; prominent breast growth in men; shrinking of testicles; baldness; infertility, and death. For women, effects can also include sex characteristic changes, such as a deeper voice and facial and body hair.
In my opinion, i don't think that steroids shouldn't be allowed in sports. I don't understand why people want to take steroids in the fisrt place. Of course, it makes you muscular and enhances your performance, but the side-effects, to me, seem too drastic. In addition, Alex is in the hall of fame, because of steroids it isnt his own performance-you could almost look at it as the steroid's performance- i don't think it is fair to the other players that aren't using steroids. They could be just as good as Alex, and not know it becauae of the steroids.
I think that the steroids should be banned from sports all together. How do you feel on the issue?
Thanks for listening,
Angie smile

Many kinds of drugs are used by athletes competing in sports all over the world. Some are used to build muscles or give the athlete extra energy. Others kill the pain of injuries or calm nerves, but many are illegal. The doctors say stimulants make you feel full of energy and confidence but they can also make you feel more aggressive. There is also evidence that people who taken steroids can become very aggressive. They do not create energy – they taken it from the body. Eventually, users feel exhausted and washed-out. When doing hard exercise there is a danger of having a heart attack. So it's very dangerous.
